The credit crunch is having little effect on romantic city break travellers, according to a top European travel website. UK tourists are still flocking to taste the romance of Venice despite the big money squeeze back home. Editors at the European city break website TravelSavvy Venice report no drop in demand for short city breaks to the popular holiday destination.
"If anything the demand is even greater this year," said TravelSavvy writer and editor Andrea DeLucia. "Perhaps people are turning to romantic city breaks in places like Venice in order to escape the depressing news at home."
Venice has always been one of the most sought-after city break destination in Europe with an estimated 20 million tourists arriving in the city each year. As well as the pull of the romantic Grand Canal with its famous gondola rides, tourists are drawn by the fabulous art and architecture and the city's atmospheric narrow streets, full of shops and cafes
.
Andrea added: "Venice is still one of the world's most treasured holiday break destinations and always tops the list in our online polls of romantic city breaks. We feared holiday destinations like Venice would be the first to be hit by the squeeze on credit but we are seeing no let-up in demand for holidays in Venice. We have been quite surprised."
