Oct. 29, 2008 - PRLog -- Everyone understands the importance of a quality education, and most people feel it is one of the most important building blocks of society. An educational system of a country can either enrich the way a student or child learns, or it can inhibit them. Costa Rica places a lot of importance on the educational system in their country and the very impressive literacy rate is evidence of that commitment to education.

Education is not only important to the citizens and inhabitants of Costa Rica, but to one individual in particular, Edward R. Mercer, the great environmentalist and humanitarian. Hailing from Canada, Ed came to Costa Rica with his wife in the year 1989 for a vacation. Since then, Ed has become a household name in this part of the world, not only for being one of the biggest real estate developers of the country, but also for his humanitarian efforts. Ed Mercer has been associated with about every humanitarian and philanthropy inspired movement in Costa Rica for years. Ed truly is a pioneer in the way of human improvement and betterment. Ed Mercer’s foundation in Costa Rica has helped many people reach their true potential through personal growth.

Ed believes in giving back to the society and what better way than educating people to become better human beings and spreading the seed of humanity. Ed certainly stands out as a man of the times where education is involved. Ed believes how well a child is educated greatly impacts his way of life and determines what he is capable of accomplishing in his life. Ed would certainly be the one to ask as he is one of Costa Rica’s largest and most reputable success stories when it comes to real estate and other investment opportunities. Ed Mercer believes in principles of everyone deserving a solid and substantial education and he is there to back it up with supporting the educational system in Costa Rica. According to research, 96 percent of Costa Rica is literate; this is one of the highest levels of literacy in all of Latin America. It is because of people like Ed Mercer and the support that he and others like him give to Costa Rica that this is possible.

In Costa Rica, there are both elementary schools and high schools throughout the entire country, and in about every community. There are three levels of education and the days of school are broken down into smaller increments in order to accommodate students and their other needs. The levels of diversified education are free and they are supported by the nation. Costa Rica constitutes that not less than six percent of the gross domestic product should be spent on educational expenses.  Grade school in Costa Rica is covered in six years. During these six years, young students learn the basics and fundamentals of mathematics, social sciences, science, Spanish and other language course as the core education and other topics such as religion, music, physical health and the arts are introduced and studied.

During the high school grades in Costa Rica, students typically graduate at 11th grade and receive their diploma. There are schools that also go to the 12th grade, but few that go over the 12th grade. The diploma that students receive when attending through the 12th grade are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Sciences. In addition to the public school system in Costa Rica, students also have the option of attending private school. The private schools that exist are for grade school through high school levels. Education is very important to the country of Costa Rica, and with the literacy rate being very high in the country; it is evident that people understand the importance of a good education, and how the excellent educational system in Costa Rica affects everyone.
