The Pennsylvania State Conference of NAACP Branches held its 74th Annual Convention in York, Pennsylvania earlier last week. The Pennsylvania State Conference for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) has been in existence for over 70 years. Its parent organization, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was founded in 1909 as a national, bi-racial organization to help eliminate social injustices. The NAACP is engaged in improving the political, educational, social and economic status of minority groups, eliminating racial prejudices; keeping the public aware of the adverse effects of racial discrimination;
The Pennsylvania State Conference of NAACP Branches supports these goals and objectives of the national office and also coordinates the supporting efforts of local branches throughout the State. The Conference also believes that future leaders begin with the development of youth. As a result of this belief, in 1936 the Youth & College Division was created. The NAACP has one of the largest organized groups of young people of any secular organization in the nation.
Cheyney University is a proud member of this division, which is presently advised by Prof. Felicia Seamon, an adjunct faculty member in the Recreation, Health and Physical Education Department at the university. The president for the Cheyney University Campus Chapter and Chairman of the Education for the Pennsylvania Youth Conference is Khalid Long, senior and theatre arts major. As a result of the diligence of the members of Cheyney’s NAACP unit, Cheyney University ranked number one of the college units of the NAACP. For the past four years, the CU unit has been in compliance with national standards and recently registered over 1,000 students to vote on the university’s campus.
At the awards ceremony for this year’s convention, Khalid Long was named Mr. NAACP of Pennsylvania for 2008. In order to be considered for this prestigious award, contestants were judged by the number of NAACP memberships gained for their individual unit, the number of voters they registered and the amount of sponsorships they received from August 18th to September 30th, as well as professionalism. At the 2009 convention, Khalid, along with other Mr. NAACP’s from across the country will have the opportunity to be named Mr. NAACP of America.
