Follow on Google News | World Zombie Day tally at 6,479 and growingFirst ever global zombie walk a huge success
By: Sandy Stuhlfire World Zombie Day was created by Mark Menold, producer and host of Pittsburgh’s “The It’s Alive Show”, as an outlet for zombie fans everywhere to have a chance to participate in a world record attempt as well as accomplish a charitable mission of raising awareness of the problem of global hunger. Close to 50 cities were slated to hold zombie walks and food drives on Sunday, October 26. More than 1,300 zombies gathered at the Monroeville Mall outside Pittsburgh, PA, exceeding the city’s count from last year by 325 – a second consecutive Guinness World Record was set there in 2007. Food donations are still being weighed by the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, but organizers feel that donations far exceed that of last year (1,200 pounds). The mall zombie walk was led by Ken Foree, star of the zombie film Dawn of the Dead which was filmed at Monroeville Mall in 1978. Foree, much like his character in Dawn, was clad in military gear including gas mask and rifle and at one point pushed a wheelbarrow carrying a replica of his partner “Roger” from the film while being chased zombies. Final counts from all cities are expected within a week, and then will be submitted to Guinness for verification of a new world record for largest zombie gathering.
