WORLDwrite and Chew on it productions are delighted to announce the completion and premiere of their latest documentary Flush it. The film, to be launched at the Battle of Ideas Festival at the Royal College of Art in London raises a major question mark over concerns about local water shortages and global water scarcity. Backed by experts the film puts demands for flushing loos centre stage.
Flush it interweaves concerns about local water shortages, global water scarcity and toilet history with aspirations for grand projects and excellent loos. Watery but never wet, the film puts aspirations for Western levels of water provision and sanitation on the map for all. Eritrean refugee Tiba is at the centre of the film. Pontificating from her own bath full of bubbles in London, Tiba tells us: “It rains nearly every day in this country, what are people going to think coming here for the Olympics and being told not to flush the loo, especially people coming from the third world.” Tiba considers everything from depleted aquifers to desalination to Livingstone’
Director Ceri Dingle says:
Numerous volunteers were involved in the making of Flush it. It is thanks to their effort we have a great and timely film, one which suggests the ‘water worriers’ & those who get in a lather about ‘water footprints’ are doing us a great disservice. It’s so enlightening to hear from experts who recognise all is possible and tell us water is one thing we really shouldn’t have to worry about.”
Producer Viv Regan adds:
“This film has been a treat to work on, from experts on the history of the loo and sanitation to Tiba telling it straight from her bath, to Dr Caspar Hewitt setting the record straight by simply pointing out the hydrological cycle means water can never be in short supply. The solutions to water shortages are no mystery, it simply involves demanding more for everyone.”
Flush it will premiere at this year's prestigious Battle of Ideas Festival at the Royal College of Art on Sunday 2 November 2008 at 12.45pm.
