I met with McCains advisor on Africa at his Campaign HQ in Virginia. I was impressed he knew the issue deeply and connected the dots. McCain was polling well on the war but very low on social issues. I was a VIP guest at his fund raiser at the Willard Hotel in Washington DC.
I spoke with McCain, his mom, Meg Whitman and many others and we captured it on video. I discussed with his mom that McCain had a unique experience of abandonment that no one else in the Senate had experienced. In Vietnam, he had his healthcare withdrawn and he was abondoned in a prison cell to die from his wounds.. He could now be a HERO again for 38 million people abandoned in the same way. For just one phone call and a meeting in the Oval office he could make 38 million peoples dreams come true and demonstrate his ability to accomplish real things on Foreign Policy before he was President.
Everything was set up and ready when just 3 days latter Rick Davis, his Campaign Manager banned all photo ops with Bush...yet again one man's fear sacrificing 38 million lives.
Senator McCain could easily show his compassionate side and win voters...getting a major program across the finish line that will enhance the image of America overseas AND demonstrate his ability to handle soft issues would turn on many more voters.
