REMODELED HISTORIC ANN ARBOR HOME TO HOST LOCAVOR EVENT FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING
Cheers to All Things Edible
ANN ARBOR, MI—October 24, 2008—On Saturday, November 8, 5–7:30 p.m. the gracious home of the Wendy Chapman and Francis Clark family opens its doors to visiting distinguished architect and landscaper, Fritz Haeg and Avalon Housing supporters for a Midwest-casual cocktail party with opportunities to chat and explore design innovation and full-frontal gardening! The hosts and guests will enjoy hearty, seasonal hors d’oeuvres featuring local foods along with local entertainment and local celebrities.
The house was built in 1914. Recently purchased by the Clarks, it has been beautifully renovated with energy star appliances and new mechanicals included in the improvements. Weathered brick and stucco enclose the three-level 4,400 sq. ft. living area under the original clay tile roof of this classic home located at 1430 Granger Avenue in Ann Arbor’s venerable Burns Park neighborhood. The resulting ambiance is the collaborative creative product of architect Linc Poley, interior designer Lisa Marra, and the Clarks. Vintage fixtures and retro furnishings enhance the elegance of former days. A 1,900 sq. ft. finished basement and a new large outdoor terrace complement the interior and exterior space.
Avalon Housing manages affordable housing for low income people in Ann Arbor and provides support to tenants with special needs.
The cocktail party is one of a five-day series of Avalon Housing events to be held in Ann Arbor to share ideas on innovation in sustainability and community building. The whirlwind edu-thon runs November 6 through November 11, 2008 and features two nationally-known visionaries and activists in the local living economies and sustainability movements – Los Angeles’ Fritz Haeg (www.fritzhaeg.com)
Wicks is the founder of the White Dog Café in Philadelphia and a national leader in the local, living economies movement. She wrote The White Dog Café Cookbook, a collection of stories and 250 innovative recipes. A Wicks hosted Zingerman’s Roadhouse dinner will feature locally grown and produced foods.
The schedule for the full program, Celebrating the Sustainable Community, is available at www.avalonhousing.org.
Since 1992, Avalon Housing has continued to develop and manage permanent affordable housing with voluntary support services for people with very low incomes or who were homeless or who have disabilities.
