A Rajasthani Business woman gets IT patent pending for satellite real-estating October 28, 2008
Ms. Amita Shringi Upadhyay of Jaipur Rajasthan applied for a patent on her technique that she has been using in her business. Her business, M/S RajBhoomi has been building real-estate related web sites for many years and then also added a famous online property portal to her business which has taken off beyond her expectations. During the course of creating the software for the online portal which exclusively caters to Rajasthan, her company developed many innovations worthy of protecting in terms of intellectual rights. Why Rajasthan? She said, "That's where I am from and nobody else was exclusively concentrating in that market segment and sensing the opportunity, we decided to enter into that market. It was slow to take-off, but eventually the people enjoyed the convenience and the massive amounts of information we offered. We are thankful to the large builders who have supported us through this process."
The idea for the satellite real-estating came about when there was a technique we used to combine satellite imagery, 3 D images and web-enabled the process. We decided that it was an important and unique technique and our attorney urged us to apply for a patent.
The surprising thing is that the Indian Patent Office has never issued an IT patent to a female in Rajasthan, so it's an important development and the fact says that Rajasthan is headed in the right direction. When asked, what exactly does the patent do, she replied simply, "that instead of bringing a potential buyer to a property, we bring the property to the buyers desktop via Internet. While that is not new, the way we are doing is effective and can offer more information."
Of course we wanted to get the patent for all over India as that is the only way to compete with nationalized real-estate portals such as 99acres or magicbricks. They can outspend us, so we thought two steps ahead of them and realized that in future, they will have to use satellite technology to be effective, and since we have patent pending number from Indian Patent Office, they will not be able to offer the quality and detailed services that we will be able to provide.
How fast will this technology be in place? She replied, "we have working models already as the Indian Patent Office requires to see such techniques in practice, but we can explore this model in a full blown fashion provided that we have the proper resources to put into it. Being that it's Rajasthan and a female owned enterprise, its difficult to find investors or any kind of institutional help to implement our revenue and business model to its fullest. We have the Rajasthan Venture Capital Fund established for these kinds of enterprises, but we have trouble reaching them. Our other option is to get an enterprising builder into partnership so we can launch this nation-wide. If even that fails, we have the wherewithal to continue forward based simply on our revenue, albeit, we will have to move at a snails pace. If we get it our way, we will make Jaipur and Rajasthan, the IT capital of 3 D rendering. We will create an army of 3 D Renderers and the rest of the world will have to come to us. We hope to also create massive amounts of jobs through this. Those are the larger dreams, but we will act diligently on our patent pending technology as many builders have signed up to use it while our prices are still reasonable and we have the time. When asked if she had any message to the women entrepreneurs, she said, "don't let your gender be a limitation and just because we are from Rajasthan, doesn't mean that we can't be highly specialized in a certain domain and cater to the rest of the world using our established best practices in that domain."
What is next for Ms. Shringi, she said, "I would like to talk with Mrs. Raje, our Chief Minister and perhaps she might understand what good we can do for the state, but she is a very busy woman."
