(Bethpage, NY…October 24, 2008) After an outstanding season, the Briarcliffe College Men’s Soccer Team has been invited to participate in the 2008 United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Soccer Championships October 29-31, hosted by Rochester College in Rochester Hills, Michigan. The USCAA is a national organization that provides quality athletic competition on a regional and national level for students at smaller institutions of higher learning.
In only its second season, the Briarcliffe Men’s Soccer Team, led by captains Alan Acevedo, Jorge Sanchez, Charles Okeke, and Sebastian Gonzalez, has excelled beyond expectations with a winning 6-5-1 record. This very young team includes almost all freshmen, with only one senior, goalkeeper, Steven Diaz.
“I’m amazed at how much the young men have developed this year,” said Diaz. “It is an honor to close out my Briarcliffe College soccer career with this team.”
In fact, the USCAA Player of the Week for October 14-19 was Briarcliffe College student Alan Acevedo. Acevedo netted a goal and added an assist in a 6-1 win over Lincoln University. He followed that performance with three goals and an assist in a victory over NYIT Brooklyn.
“These young athletes have worked very hard to get to this point and I’m so proud of each and every one them,” said Head Coach Rafael Morais, “The entire Briarcliffe College family of faculty, students and administrators is cheering them on toward success at the USCAA 2008 Championship.”
