Do you have a special book but you’re afraid to pick it up because the binding is falling apart or the pages are coming loose? Often, books are more than just a good read; they include family history, church tradition or contain the history of a community.
At 10:00am, 11:00am, noon and 1:00pm on Saturday, November 15, 2008, Susan Soleil will offer a 10-15-minute presentation on book repair and book restoration. After her presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to meet with Susan for an evaluation of repair for their own books that need repairs or restoration. Pre-registration is highly suggested to secure your slot for book evaluations as there will be a limited number of time slots each hour. Evaluations are $4.
Susan Soleil has repaired books since 1971, when she was an apprentice to a Master Bookbinder in Florence, Italy. “I learned how to infuse my books with quality materials and quality craftsmanship. I continue to hold to these practices as I sit at my workbench and repair books for people so they can feel safe about passing the book on to future generations of their family," she says. "A book has a primary need to be functionally strong and correct. And then come the aesthetics."
Commissioned works include creating custom photo albums for the Clintons during their White House years and presentation books for Prince Philip of England and the Sultan of Brunei. In addition to book repairs, Susan Soleil offers her own line of handcrafted journals. She was recently featured in The News and Observer.
