Kevin Powell and the Cast of HBO’s The Wire Join the Vote To Empower! Bus Tour and Rally in VA

Oct. 23, 2008 - PRLog -- Kevin Powell, acclaimed author and activist, will be lending his voice along with the cast of HBO’s, ‘The Wire’, Marc H. Morial, President and CEO of the National Urban League, the National Coalition for Black Civic Participation (Unity ’08) and the Black Leadership Forum for the Vote To Empower! bus tour and rally happening on October 23, 24, and 25, 2008, across the swing state of Virginia.   This special Vote To Empower! initiative happening in Virginia will be titled The Urban Vote: “Down to The Wire” and will encourage urban voters to exercise their right to vote on election day, November 4th, 2008.  

Kevin Powell, a strong community leader and political activist, and most recently a candidate for the 2008 Congressional election in New York, has been actively promoting voter registration and participation and will continue to use his inspiring words as a part of the Vote To Empower! initiative.  The tour will make stops at several of Virginia’s college campuses including Virginia Commonwealth University, Virginia State University, and Norfolk State University.  Join Kevin Powell, the cast of ‘The Wire’, and celebrities to help ensure that the voices of all Americans are fully represented in the 2008 presidential election.  


About Kevin Powell
Kevin Powell, a long-time resident of Brooklyn, is a poet, essayist, public speaker, hip hop historian, and political activist.  He is the author or editor of 9 books, the most recent release being The Black Male Handbook: A Blueprint for Life and was a Democratic candidate in the 2008 Congressional primary in Brooklyn, New York.  He  plans to run again in 2010  Kevin was also a founding staff member at Vibe magazine where he interviewed, among many others, the late Tupac Shakur on several occasions.  In addition, he was a cast member on the first season of MTV’s “The Real World: New York City” (1992). On his life work, Kevin Powell says simply, “My life-calling is to be a servant for the people, period. Money, fame, status, personal achievements, and all that mean very little to me when pain and suffering are still real on this planet.  I am interested in the powerless becoming powerful. “
