"Sunken Plantations:
The Santee Cooper Hydro-Electric project required the impoundment of lakes Marion and Moultrie. In 1939 it was the largest land clearing project in U.S. history. The 225-square mile reservoir was excavated and 42 miles of dams and dikes were constructed. This included the 26-mile earthen dike that reaches 78 feet above the coastal plain. The Pinopolis Dam included the hydro station and navigation lock, the highest single-lift lock in the world.
Communities were relocated, cemeteries moved.
Mr. Bostick will speak about his book and about history that lies buried beneath the lakes.
This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Berkeley County Library. The library is located at 1003 N. Hwy 52 in Moncks Corner. You are cordially invited. Please call 843-719-4223 if you have questions or need directions. Mr. Bostick will have copies of his book for sale at the event.
