When plans began for a bridal shower party for Jennifer Shoemaker the obvious theme choice was shoes. Not only did this 20-something have a well-known passion for shoes, but her nickname in college was “Shoes.” Shower hostesses Angi Hart Miller, Nicki Bergman, Amy and Joy Hart, all of Huber Heights, served shoe-shaped cut-out cookies, gave pedicure kits as prizes and nail polish and buffers as favors. Since all guests were in their late twenties and older and established in careers, they thought it appropriate to add a grown-up dimension to the festivities. Angi Hart Miller thought of the charitable aspect and suggested collecting shoes to go along with the theme. “I knew of the YWCA’s shelter, made contact and learned of Hope’s Closet. It was a perfect fit – women helping women. All those in attendance were happy to donate and some even purchased new shoes to contribute,”
Hope’s Closet provides clothing and amenities in a shopping environment for women and children who receive services from the YWCA Dayton. The clothing and accessories in the room are entirely donated by the community and distributed to meet the needs of women and their children. Families who have transitioned from shelter into permanent housing are also permitted to make selections from the inventory.
