East Randolph, VT - Many people find themselves or those they love rendered unable to speak due to stroke, cancer, surgery, age, accident, injury, disease and more. Arlene Disbrow has invented a communication system called 'Point to Communicate' and has just added a new domain name to make it easier for folks to find her booklets.
Originally developed for her father, who suffered from Parkinson’s and Lyme’s disease, Ms Disbrow designed a sophisticated, comprehensive communication system that covers the essential physical, emotional, and mental needs of the individual who has a clear mind but is unable to speak. "After using the booklet with my Dad, my aunt had a stroke. I gave her two of my booklets, one for the nursing home and one for home use. She was delighted to be able to communicate again, just like my Dad."
Ms Disbrow has her booklets in eight hospitals in New England so far, the Veteran Administration Medical Centers in VT and ME, several nursing homes, two adult day centers, the Visiting Nurses Association in Vermont and three VT state agencies: VT Assistive Technology, VT Center for Independent Living, and The VT Council on Aging. As Ms Disbrow continues to go to more states, she hopes to make her patented system a tool used in every medical facility, adult day centers, nursing homes, and home health agencies. She has had great feedback from her customers, and the medical professionals in four states. "I originally focused on what my Dad needed, and then realized that anyone could use this system easily. That's when I began to develop the booklets not just for the patients, their families but also for the caregivers, and medical professionals so everyone could communicate more clearly."
Today, quality health care should include a means for the patient to communicate essential needs as required by the National Joint Committee’s Communication Bill of Rights, Medicare’s Patient Bill of Rights, and the American’s with Disabilities Act:, but often does not provide. ‘Point to Communicate’
