Oct. 19, 2008 - PRLog -- Ron Kauffman, radio talk show host of Boomer & Senior LifeStyles Intelligent Talk Radio program, announced the release of his book, Caring for a Loved One with Alzheimer’s Disease, based on years of research and his personal experiences as a care provider for his mother.

Ron Kauffman, knows the challenges and demands of being a care provider for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease.  For the past 5-years he has seen the ravages caused by Alzheimer’s disease, as he became the primary care provider for his mother who is battling the disease.

When asked about caring for his mother, Kauffman will tell you that, “No one volunteers for this job - caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease.  For me, the biggest initial challenges were understanding the disease, discovering and learning so many things involved in being a care provider for an Alzheimer’s patient.”

Asked why he wrote the book, Kauffman is quick to point out that there is a great deal of information about Alzheimer’s disease on hundreds of Internet websites, but not enough information in a single location or source about being a caregiver.  Kauffman says, “Too many family members have had to learn about caregiving for a loved one with Alzheimer’s through the ‘school of hard knocks.’ I wanted to put key information into a single source - a book, less than 100 pages long - giving caregivers important information in everyday language that’s easy to read and understand, right at their fingertips. My goal is to ease their way, explain the challenges along the path, and shorten the learning process for Alzheimer’s caregivers.”

Caring for a Loved One with Alzheimer’s Disease is a comprehensive resource for spouses and families facing the daunting task of caring for a loved with cognitive impairment, from early symptoms to a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease.  Chapters include: the difference between normal forgetfulness and Alzheimer’s disease, the symptom similarities of Alzheimer’s and depression, and a clear explanation of the stages of Alzheimer’s disease.  There are suggestions for dealing with your loved one as the disease progresses, and guidelines for handling your own caregiver stress.  His book offers a wealth of usable information with answers to questions ranging from, “How to recognize the signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease?” to concerns about the question, “Is Alzheimer’s disease hereditary?”  There’s also a chapter listing national organizations that provide information on many aspects of Alzheimer’s caregiving.

Caring for a Loved One with Alzheimer’s Disease provides facts, definitions and explanations about many aspects of the disease. To enhance his own research efforts, Kauffman recruited experts on Alzheimer’s disease including neurologists, geriatric physicians, and psychologists to review and verify the medical and scientific accuracy of his book.

In addition to his years as host of the award-winning Boomer & Senior LifeStyles live talk radio program, Mr. Kauffman’s accomplishments include: 2004 - earned his designation as a Certified Senior Advisor; 2005 - selected to attend the White House Conference on Aging; 2006 – received the 8-State Southeastern Association of Area Agencies on Aging Positive Images Of Aging Award for his on-air contributions concerning aging; 2007 - named a Fellow by the National Press Foundation for his work in broadcast journalism, and attended the Press Foundation’s  “Retirement in the 21st Century” conference in Washington, DC.
