Witch Creek Fire Anniversary | Witch Creek Survivors Fund Raiser | Things to Do October 18th 2008

1,100 American Flag Are Setup in the Rancho Bernardo Community Park to Mark the One Year Anniversary of the Witch Creek Fire. Flags from the Event are On Sale to Raise Money for the Fired Up Systems, Fire Station #33 and the Rotary Club of RB.

Nearly 1 year after the devastating Witch Creek Fire, an amazing patriotic display of flags has been created to bring the community together to Honor, Remember, and Heal. One flag has been setup for each of the 1030 homes that was destroyed and 70 home damaged by the Witch Creek Fire in October, 2007. The communities honored by this event are: Rancho Bernardo, Poway, Escondido, Ramona, Lakeside and Rancho Santa Fe.  

The Healing Field of flags will be open from Dawn to Dusk beginning at 9:00 AM Saturday, October 18th and concluding at Noon Monday October 20th.

On Saturday October 18th, there will be an hour-long ceremony beginning at 9:00 AM in the Rancho Bernardo Community Park, 18448 W. Bernardo Drive. Everyone is invited to attend. Seating is limited so attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs to the ceremony. The presentation will be emceed by Carlo Cecchetto, News Anchor from KFMB Channel 8. Also participating in this special event will be: the Marine Corps Color Guard, Rancho Bernardo High School Royal Regiment Band and the Rancho Bernardo High School Madrigals. Special Guest speakers are: San Diego Fire Captain Tracy Jarman and San Diego City Councilman Brian Mainschein.

Another special part of this event is to honor community members for their extraordinary (post-fire) efforts. The Honorees, chosen by the RB Healing Field committee, will be San Diego City Councilman Brian Maienschein; Poway City Councilwoman Merrilee Boyack; Renee VanHeel, president and founder of Fired Up Sisters; Helen Phillips, Rancho Bernardo-Glassman Recreation Center director; San Diego police officer Shannah Kanoa; John Gates, Rancho Bernardo Inn general manager; and RB Inn employees Dave Buckles, Esteban Chavez, Alfonso Escutia, Guillermo Heredia, Julio Montes, Pedro Ramirez, Jorge Rosales, Manuel Soto and Jose Luis Valencia.

Money raised through the sales of flags at the event will be divided between Fired Up Sisters, a group of more than 300 Witch Creek fire victims; Rotary Club of Rancho Bernardo and Fire Station No. 33 Renovation Committee.

Each of the 1,100 flags on display is available for purchase at the event or online at http://colonialflagfoundation.org/ranchobernardo. Flags are $40 each (add $5 for shipping if not picking the flag up Monday afternoon).
