PRLog (Press Release) - Oct 16, 2008 -
Costa Rica is a country situated in Central America between Nicaragua and Panama.  Democracy is followed in Costa Rica and is being followed since past 115 years or so. The main religion of this country is Roman Catholicism, with Buddhists and Jewish people occupying this country as well and following these religions to some extent. Costa Rica has some diverse religions as this beautiful country attracts many visitors from all over the world. One such person, Ed Mercer, came to this country in 1989 and charmed by its tropical beauty, decided to settle here.

A self taught entrepreneur, who has spent his entire life for the noble cause of helping the downtrodden through various means, Ed is a true humanitarian at heart. Ed Mercer has joined hands with the President of Costa Rica on a project involving work related to the betterment of humanity. It proves that Ed is not only interested in making money but is a person who would find satisfaction and happiness in the betterment of others. Ed Mercer has a passion for wild life and ecology conservation. He brought about a revolution in the real estate business of Costa Rica. When Ed landed in Costa Rica, he found that there was lot of cruelty done to animals for the pleasure of human beings. Ed marked a full stop to all those poachers and planted lots of almond trees to increase the population of the animals being killed by the poachers.

Ed’s greatest achievement is the Edward R. Mercer foundation which is linked to many foundations like Feed the Child, Missing Child, Crippled Child, suicide hotlines and battered housewives. Ed worked very hard for the betterment of the needy of the society. Ed Mercer had landed in Costa Rica as a guest, but then he made Costa Rica his hometown and settled there. He got the name Mr. Costa Rica for all the good deeds that he had done for the improvement of the society in Costa Rica. Ed Mercer’s adopted home has been green listed in the top ten countries. Ed has always made efforts in this regard to protect the greenery of the region and preserve the biodiversity.

Roman Catholicism is the state religion of Ed’s adopted home. 69% of the population of Costa Rica comprises of Christians, that too Roman Catholics. Methodist, Lutheran, Episcopal, Baptist and other Protestant groups also have equal importance in Costa Rica. Small towns in Costa Rica have their own churches and people have a great belief in God. Our Lady of Los Angeles is the biggest church in Costa Rica.

Other than the Christian Community, Judaism, Islam, Taoism, Hare Krishna, Scientology, Tenrikyo, and the Baha'i Faith are also seen throughout the country. The people of Costa Rica believe in religious beliefs and many of these religious people reside in the Central Valley. Recently due to immigration from different countries, other religions are also being followed. However, if immigration continues there are possibilities that the Christians are outnumbered with an equal population of other religions as well, which is almost in the run now.

Costa Rica is a democratic country and it has given its people the freedom of religion. There is no hard and fast or strict religion to be followed and people can preach what they want. There is no interference with whatever religion you follow. You will be secure and are free to practice and preach whatever religion you want.
