Fashion is a word that makes us think of something which is the latest and stylish, whether it be in regards to clothing, cosmetics or behavior. Fashion generally applies to people, who wear attire of style and of the time, but it is not only manner, it is a personal mode of expression of the person within you. In Costa Rica you will find and experience the unique fashion of the world in spite of its tropical climate.
When we talk about its tropical paradise, one cannot forget the biggest admirer of Costa Rican beauty, that is, Ed R. Mercer, one of the largest land owners, builders and real estate developers in Costa Rica. An environmentalist par excellence, Ed Mercer came to Costa Rica in 1989 from Canada along with his wife for the Iron Man Competition. However, it’s stunning beauty captivated Ed and he decided to make this country his home. Ed then forayed into the land development business, buying and selling beautiful properties along with this wife and succeeded in building his own real estate empire there. A humanitarian and environmentalist par excellence, Ed’s greatest achievement to date, the Edward R. Mercer Foundation, never went astray of the basic principles of sustainable development and conservation of ecology, which are the ingrained principles of Ed’s enterprise. They can be found in Ed’s real estate company and developmental projects which are all dedicated to the overall safety of the biodiversity in Costa Rica.
Ed Mercer is also an ardent orator and has spoken in 86 countries, in all the provinces of Canada and all the states of the United States of America. Ed generally delivers courses on Personal Growth and Development, Wealth Enhancement Seminars, Costa Rica, Real Estate Investment and Environment Issues. The founding of Edward R. Mercer Foundation is his supreme achievement, which is fanatical towards the betterment of this planet by ecological conservation and education.
Ed Mercer has also been applauded worldwide for his commendable efforts to preserve the dying out natural world species and safeguard the environment by reforestation efforts. Ed recently got inducted into the prestigious Environmental Hall of Fame in a star studded ceremony held in June at Los Angeles for his ground-breaking efforts.
As far as fashion is concerned, there are two types of clothing worn in Ed’s adopted home. One is the local clothing same as you find everywhere and other is their traditional wear that they wear on special occasions. Women and Men wear traditional dresses only on special occasions.
The traditional dress of women in Costa Rica comprises of long and colorful tiered skirt decorated with rick rack or ribbons on the hem and a white sleeveless blouse with white wide ruffle which fall on the shoulders from the neck. One thing which makes the women’s outfits unique, is a traditional rose placed over their ear. Men are not behind women, they too have their own way to dress up and define fashion. They like to wear dark color pants with a white button down shirt, a red cummerbund and a kerchief tied around their neck with a hat which makes them look poised and attractive. Traditional wear is unique in itself but when it comes to modern ways, girls like to wear hip hugging jeans and fitted t-shirts and boys wear wide pants with button down shirts or T-shirts.
In Costa Rica clothing is not expensive so all follow fashion and are trendy. In Costa Rica fashion is not possession of any selective segment of people. All ages follow it, including the older people, especially women, who wear velour pants and black nail polish which looks classy. However, the strong-willed ones can wear anything from shorts at the beach to jeans in public but they always keep one thing in mind, that what they wear is comfortable and fits well.
