cigar- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PR Log (Press Release) –
Oct 18, 2008 – It appeared quite logical that when a North Carolina man acquired a box of rare and very expensive cigars, he would insure them against fire. In spite of the value of the property, the man promptly set about sending the cigars up in blue smoke. The man consumed the entire box in just a few weeks.
Somehow it slipped under the insurance company's radar that the man had not even bothered to pay the first premium of the insurance policy. "Sadly my rare cigars have been lost through a series of small fires", was the man's statement as he filed a claim with the insurance company. A claim which the company declined to pay. The man promptly pursued the matter and took the insurance company to court. The judge in his summation, agreed that the claim was frivolous, but the man was holding a policy from the insurance company, which certified the cigars were insurable. The fact the company had covered them against fire, but failed to specify on the policy, what form of fire was unacceptable, was an error on their part. The insurance company was forced to accept the ruling of the court and chose not to go through the costly process of fighting the decision. The man was awarded $15,000, as the cigars had been lost through fire. Immediately upon the cheque being presented at the bank, the insurance company ordered the arrest of the man. They had him charged on twenty-four counts of arson. The company used the man's own testimony from the previous court-case in order to convict him of having deliberately burned insured property. The man was sentenced for a total of twenty-four months in jail, besides being made to pay a $24,000 fine.
