La Valle D`Itria is situated in a beautiful plain between Locorotondo and Martina Franca, about 30 kms from Taranto, the capital of the province.
The region is covered with ancient olive trees and fruit- and almond trees. Countless vineyards extend over the even and hilly scenery Woodlands are lying next to fields on which red poppies are flourishing in early summer on the dark earth. Drystone walls separate fields accurately cultivated. Farmers have collected the stones of these walls from the fields for centuries. They are also used for constructing the trulli, the typical construction of this region: a round building with a conic roof.
Countless trulli are scattered throughout the entire Valle D´Itria, the heart of the trulli-country. Almost 5000 of these unique buildings are situated here. The houses in white chalk either isolated or assembled appear like little fairytale houses amidst this colorful scenery.
Not surprisingly, the UNESCO decided that the Valle D`Itria and Alberobello, home to a mere 1000 trulli, was worth to be protected. Since 1996 the region and the trulli belong to the World Cutlural Heritage.
At the same time cultural life, shopping, wine and dine is catered for nearby in such lively towns as Martina Franca and Cisternino, Alberobello and Locorotondo.
