The Quarrymen can say they knew John Lennon “way back when”—before he joined the Beatles and attained icon status as one of the greatest figures in rock ‘n’ roll.
The surviving members of this historically significant band are coming to Anthology Oct. 21 for a performance and to share anecdotes about the early days of the band, whose line-up also briefly included Paul McCartney and George Harrison.
**Special tickets are available for a separate meet-and-greet with the Quarrymen after their performance. Proceeds from all ticket sales will benefit Guitars in the Classroom (www.guitarsintheclassroom.org)
Dave Mason, of “Breakfast with the Beatles” and the morning show on The Walrus105.7, will emcee the event.
Lennon and a group of schoolmates formed the Quarrymen in Liverpool in 1956. Their sound was called “skiffle,”
Five of the surviving members of the Quarrymen reunited for a benefit concert that also celebrated the 40th anniversary of when Lennon met McCartney, performing at the same church where the two played together for the first time. The success of the event led to an album and a tour, with concerts at major venues such as The Bottom Line in New York. Critics and fans alike agree that this is not merely a Beatles cover band—hearing the Quarrymen gives music aficionados an opportunity to hear the kind of music the Beatles were reared on, and a rare chance to hear authentic skiffle music, which became all but extinct after the 1950s.

ABOUT GUITARS IN THE CLASSROOM
Guitars in the Classroom is a nonprofit organization based in San Diego that inspires, trains and equips classroom teachers to integrate music and music-making across the general studies curriculum through “song-based learning,” giving students from pre-school through high school the opportunity to learn through making music.
GITC programs provide “easy” group guitar, singing, song leading and songwriting instruction that helps teachers integrate performing arts into their lessons. And, thanks to the generous support of numerous sponsors from the music-products industry, GITC is able to provide participating teachers with free access to instruments, music accessories, resource materials and instruction. GITC's grassroots approach also provides professional and volunteer opportunities to musically inclined educators and community members, who work together to create lasting local programs from coast to coast.
