Just Andersen candlesticks light up the room for $15,600 at Treadway-Toomey Auction

Oct. 9, 2008 - PRLog -- (Oak Park, Ill.) - A pair of fine and large Just Andersen candlesticks lit up the room for $15,600 at a 20th Century Art & Design Auction held Sept. 14 by Treadway-Toomey Auctions, based in Cincinnati. The sale was conducted at the John Toomey Gallery in Oak Park, Ill. The candlesticks were among the top lots in an auction that saw 90 percent of the 1,130 high-quality lots change hands.
   “Basically, this was a very good auction with strong prices realized for the better merchandise,” said Don Treadway of Treadway-Toomey Auctions. “Most of the items were consigned to us by prominent estates. It was an eclectic mix of merchandise, and bidders were enthusiastic.” Online bidding was facilitated by eBay Live Auctions and LiveAuctioneers.com.
   Following are highlights from the sale. All prices quoted include a 20 percent buyer's premium.
   One of the top lots of the sale was a gorgeous amphora vase titled Sovereign of the Night that soared to $18,000. A pair of lots fetched identical prices of $15,600: a large form Dirk Van Erp (American, 1860-1933) hammered copper table lamp, and a gouache on panel work by Jessie Hazel Arms Botke (American, 1883-1971), titled Mural Design, 11 inches by 39-1/2 inches, signed and dated lower right.
   An original oil on canvas work by Ida Marie Perrault (American, 1874-1956), titled Girl With Cat (1908), topped out at $13,200; an original watercolor painting by John Whorf (American, 1903-1959), titled Art Institute of Chicago (circa 1935), also brought $13,200; a Tiffany Studios lamp with adjustable bronze base made $12,000; and a Handel lamp with bronze metal base made $12,000.
   An orotone work by Edward Sheriff Curtis (American, 1868-1952), titled The Oath – Asparoke, achieved $10,200; a blue and brown Overbeck vase with matt glaze coasted to $8,400; an anemone chair by Hernando and Humberto Campana rose to $4,200; an FSW-10 folding screen by Charles and Ray Eames went to a determined bidder for $4,800; and a Charles and Ray Eames chaise hit $3,600.
