webooks Launches “Essential Computing Skills for Women” – Latest Online Book

To coincide with the online publication of “Essential Computing Skills for Women” – an online computing book – webooks.co.uk takes a look at women in the corporate world.

Oct. 7, 2008 - PRLog -- It can be unbelievably difficult to conquer the corporate world.  Double that for women.  And triple that if, like many women with families, you take a leave from work to raise your children and return to find the workforce a fast-paced, overwhelming environment.

It would seem like the deck is stacked against women in the workplace.  Not only are we paid less and taking on more financial burdens, but the number of women in the workforce is increasing exponentially.

Don’t give up just yet.  Women—and especially returning mothers—have a substantial knowledge base to offer the corporate world.  We excel in different areas and possess different critical skills that may actually make women the future of the corporate office.

Women Treat the Office as a Community

Traditionally, this has only meant that women are more likely to show up in human resources.  What this translates to now, as women are fighting for corporate spots, is that are women creating a team that works in unison—leading to higher productivity and increased employee satisfaction and efficiency.  Have four kids running around at home?  Chances are you are better than your colleagues at resolving arguments and encouraging disparate personalities to work together.

Women Have Some Impressive History

While it’s true that only 6% of the Fortune 500 have female CEOs, women have a pretty incredible, and often overlooked, impact on history - from Elizabeth I of England, a woman famed for her careful managerial skills and excellent judgment, to Catherine the Great, who brought a great cultural enlightenment to Russia, to Cleopatra, who could even be interpreted as an icon for the modern executive:  she brought the Egyptian monarchy (which before her spoke exclusively Greek and separated themselves from their subjects) back to the people, learning the language and customs of the people she was commanding.  These are just a few examples.

The End Result

Women with families have not be putting their careers on hold while they run their household, they’ve merely be getting some intensive training on running an office.  And whether or not you’re a mother, the key to women succeeding is confidence in their own abilities and their inherent value to any job they pursue.
