Six pack or six shooter?
Sarah Palin heartily embraces the idea that she represents Joe Six Pack, and her legions of fans have taken to calling her Sarah Six Pack, as a term of endearment. (You can actually buy the web address SarahSixPack.com, or JaneSixPack.com, and turn those websites into adoring destinations for voters who are sweet on America’s #1 hockey mom!)
But now the Governor from The Nation’s Icebox has warmed to a new role – that of gunslinger for the McCain campaign. She’s attacking Senator Obama for his allegedly being “pals with terrorists”, and she’s strongly endorsing the Republican National Committee’s call for an investigation of Obama’s foreign contributions.
That means Sarah is taking on the classic role of vice presidential candidates – being the attack dog of the ticket, allowing the man at the top, McCain, to claim his hands are clean.
Political mud slinging is as old as the hills. What’s new here is that it’s coming from a) a female VP candidate, and b) a John McCain who early on promised that his campaign would be civil and respectful, focused on issues, unlike those of the past.
The problem for McCain/Palin is that time is running out and Obama/Biden are leading in nearly all the polls. On top of that, the Democrats have more money to spend on TV advertising, direct mail efforts and grassroots organizing.
