Beverly Hills – The United Nurses Associations of California/Union of Health Care Professionals (UNAC/UHCP) will be holding its 33rd Biennial Convention from Sunday, October 5, 2008 through Wednesday, October 8, 2008 at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.
On Monday, October 6, 2008, the convention will officially begin at 9:00 a.m. Speakers for the opening ceremonies will be UNAC/UHCP President Kathy Sackman, RN; Maria Elena Durazo, Executive Secretary of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO; and California State Senate President pro Tem-elect Darrell Steinberg. The speakers will focus on the importance of health care professionals becoming actively involved in politics to effectively impact elections and public policy issues.
The convention theme is “Navigating Our Future.” Almost 600 delegates representing the 16,000 UNAC/UHCP nurses and other health care professionals from across Southern California will focus on issues affecting unions and health care, including staffing ratios, health care reform, and political action.
Special recognition will be given during the color guard to Armin Reyes, a UNAC/UHCP Staff Representative currently serving in Iraq, and all US military divisions. The color guard will present a flag that Reyes arranged to have flown over the Headquarters of the Multi-National Corps in Iraq in the union’s honor.
