Oct 02, 2008 – Bernardo’s Restaurant at the historic Hotel Galvez reopened for business on Wednesday, Oct. 1 following a temporary closure due to Hurricane Ike. Bernardo’ s will offer a breakfast buffet from 6:30 to 11 a.m. and an all day buffet from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Friday. The restaurant will resume its full ala carte menu beginning on Saturday, Oct. 4.
Executive Chef Jerry Helminski of Bernardo’s Restaurant also plans to resume the hotel’s popular champagne brunch on Sunday, Oct. 5. Sunday brunch features an array of fruit, breads, omelet station, pasta bar, and various breakfast and lunch entrees as well as a dessert room.
The hotel’s lobby bar is now open from 6:30 to 11 a.m. offering coffee, danishes and whole fruit and the full bar is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
“We are very excited to reopen Bernardo’s Restaurant,” says Helminski. “Our Sunday champagne brunch is a longstanding tradition at the Hotel Galvez and it shows that Galveston is slowly going to return to business as usual.”
The Hotel Galvez, originally built to show Galveston’s resilience following the devastating 1900 Storm, opened in 1911 and is located on the beachfront at 2024 Seawall Blvd.
Brunch at the Hotel Galvez & Spa was rated as the best Sunday brunch by readers of the Galveston County Daily News. Brunch is $32 for adults, $28 for seniors (60 years or older) and $19 for children ages 6 – 12. Children ages 5 and younger are complimentary.
The Hotel Galvez sustained minimal damage from Hurricane Ike. The hotel currently has electricity, water and elevator service and a full restoration is underway. The hotel plans to welcome guests in early November.
