Washington, DC–Maimah Karmo founder of The Tigerlily Foundation founder appeared on the “Oprah Winfrey” show on Tuesday, September 30, 2008 at 4:00pm EST. Ms. Karmo shared the stage with actress Christina Applegate, Nancy Brinker, founder of Susan G. Komen for the Cure and Christina Applegate’s oncologist, Dr. Philomena McAndrew. They discussed breast cancer, coping, survivorship and its aftermath.
Ms. Karmo shared her personal experience with breast cancer and discussed how it changed her life at the age of 32. Ms. Karmo also spoke about Tigerlily and its focus on educating, advocating for, empowering and supporting young women affected by breast cancer. She created The Tigerlily Foundation with the primary focus of educating women under the age of 40 about the disease and providing chemotherapy buddy support, meetings for survivors, financial assistance, beauty and spa services and free mammograms to young women. Ms. Karmo has been working to bring more awareness to this issue through The Tigerlily Foundation.
In addition to Ms. Karmo sharing her personal story, Ms. Applegate’s spoke about her decision to have a double mastectomy, and Ms. Brinker’s discussed her success in creating the largest breast cancer foundation globally.
“It is important to raise awareness of breast cancer, especially in women under 40 because we have been trained to be concerned about it only after we have turned 40 years old, it is so important to implement preventative practices, early detection saves lives”, stated Ms. Karmo.
