For many years scholars have only been able to have their work published in scholarly journals, or else reduce their work significantly for it to be published in mass-consumption writing magazines. For independent scholars, essayists and academics who write other works that aren't necessarily rigorous enough for academic journals, this has posed difficulties.
Until now.
Brascoe Publishing is proud to announce that they are now the publishing body for the Harbinger Journal (http://harbinger.brascoebooks.com.au), and that Harbinger is now open for submissions.
Previously, Harbinger was run as a side-concern in the off-time of the Brascoe principals. Now, with their publishing house in full-swing, they are again able to start taking submissions. Unlike with previous Harbinger issues, however, submissions will be taken continuously.
'We had to change the way that Harbinger works because it started to seem at odds with the fluid nature of the internet,' commented Brascoe partner Leticia Supple. 'Trying to run an online magazine as though it were a print-based zine seemed to run against the open possibilities that electronic publishing offers.'
Instead, Harbinger takes submissions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Out of those submissions, the ones that are judged the best by the publishing body will be published on the site each month.
'We find that this continual cycle means that we don't need to set themes - which can be difficult to gain copy for - and we don't always have the threat of deadlines hanging over us or over the publication,' Leticia explained. 'It also means that it's easier for writers; they are able to spend an additional week finalising and polishing their work, whereas before they might have had to submit it when it wasn't quite finished.'
The new nature of Harbinger also opens up other exciting opportunities for various other artists. The publishers are hoping that visual artists will grasp the opportunity of having their work, and commentaries on their work, published in this form.
Submissions are now being taken for consideration as part of the Harbinger publication. For more information please visit the website at http://harbinger.brascoebooks.com.au or the visit the blog at http://harbinger.brascoebooks.com.au/
