It is 1933 and the Great Depression has made jobs scarce. Young Jack Lambeth’s mother has not long died and it is just Jack and his father Henry, the lighthouse keeper at Neptune’s Fingers, left. The school days are almost over so Jack is to be apprenticed to his father at the lighthouse.
Jack’s home is on an island joined to mainland by a sand spit that disappears at high tide and crossing is dangerous. One day, Jack loses site of time and when he thinks about getting home, the tide has covered the spit. In spite of warnings, he attempts the crossing and is almost drowned. But he is surprised to see a boy watching him from the shore. No one lives near the island, so he is intrigued.
In a series of dreams, Jack is transported to the year 1853 on The Kestrel, a ship whose spine is impaled on the rocks near his home in Australia. He again sees the mysterious boy who was watching him that day, and he sees another young figure, who he immediately recognizes as his grandfather Edward McPhail. Jack has heard stories about how he stowed away, having fled Dublin, and came to Australia on a sailing ship.
Jack learns more than he bargains for on board when he and his best friend Bill Tarrant are transported back to The Kestrel. His own family’s history is interwoven with the lives of some of its sailors in a way that changes Jack forever.
