As More Michigan Construction Workers Venture into Other States to Find Work, CNS Opens Its Borders to Ease the Process

Sept. 26, 2008 - PRLog -- With an economic recession threatening Michigan laborers and colder weather approaching, many work back logs are drying up for local construction and trades companies. According to the Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Growth, unemployment rates for seasonally unadjusted labor increased in 16 of the 17 labor regions in Michigan.
In their efforts to assist construction professionals in finding work, Construction News Service of Michigan, Inc. has increased the reach of the Michigan based company’s weekly construction leads publication to Northern Indiana. “Businesses are closing their doors, leaving thousands of Michigan workers jobless. Needless to say we’ve seen a slowdown in the construction market.” said Heather Monroe, CEO of CNS.
As Michigan’s construction work-force becomes more nomadic in their search for work, CNS is following suit by reporting on the upcoming projects taking place from Fort Wayne Indiana to Cook County, Illinois. “Times are tough and these companies are scrambling to wherever they can find work. Fortunately, CNS reporters know where to look,” said Monroe.
It seems the benefits of finding work in out of state markets outweigh the rising cost of transportation. David Smith, President of Coye’s Canvas & Awnings of Grand Rapids, agrees. In a prepared statement from Smith, he stated:

“As a small business owner in a global economy, I have realized that global is not just overseas, but in the next state as well. We are currently quoting work out of our geographic area as a way to overcome our poor economy here in Michigan. We have to take all things, like gas and accommodations for workers into consideration in order to remain competitive.
We’ve found that we can be profitable in out of town markets if we all do our jobs. With the rising cost of raw materials, estimating and making sure all measurements are accurate is the first steps for us to ensure on time delivery and quality. We feel this is an important step for us to provide a home town feel to our out of state customers.”

Undoubtedly, Michigan is in a period of economic transition, but CNS remains positive about the future. “Michigan is a front-runner in environmentally sustainable construction; which has currently been addressed in recent legislation,” says Heather Monroe. “I’m confident that Michigan construction companies will be at the helm in leading the rest of the nation in best practices.”
