However, there has been a recent surge in new businesses in Germany that lie outside the technology sector. Going beyond the realm of social networking is a unique site that uses this type of format to connect business entrepreneurs with angel investors based both in Germany and abroad. Known as the Angel Investment Network, the site has set up branches in over 50 different countries, with hopes of helping both sides find each other much more easily.
While Germany still has far fewer business angels than the US, the amount of angel networks that have formed in the past ten years has been dramatic, going from zero to 63 in 2000 alone, and many of them are now well established.
In the last few years, events that had only previously taken place in the UK and US, such as speed pitching events have been held in Germany and Switzerland. It is also one of the few markets where more business angel investment is placed in smaller Seed Capital type deals, as opposed to larger Venture Capital investments. VC investments of course are still larger, but less frequent in the German market.
Some angel investment networks in Germany are sponsored by local governments, while others are funded by the investors themselves. Angel Investment Netz, the German branch of the Angel Investment Network, aims to make the connection more direct, with thousands of investors and entrepreneurs already registered. There are a lot of potential business angels in Germany, with estimates of around 270,000, although only about 40,000 are known to be active. With communication being one of the key obstacles, the Angel Investment Netz hopes to bring the amount of active investors in Germany closer to the 270,000 mark.
