It’s tough to argue the fact that Mollydooker Carnival of Love Shiraz ($90) is one seriously great red wine – no matter how fun and unexpected the label may be! The 2005 vintage was rated 99 points by The Wine Advocate. 2006 was rated by Harvey Steiman as the “#8 Top Wine in the World” in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 wines of 2007, and it was awarded 97 points by Jay Miller at The Wine Advocate.
The label, developed in tandem by Sarah Marquis and an Australian design firm Mash Studio, depicts a joyous and colorful scene of revelry. So lovely is the artwork, a passerby would be hard-pressed not to go in for a closer look. And that is precisely the point. Not just for fun, a wine label can actually bolster interest on the shelf.
Look deeper and you start to engage in the entire story and history of Sarah and Sparky’s winemaking history together. Both Sarah and Sparky are Mollydookers – an Aussie term for a left hander – and if you look closely, the characters illustrated on the Carnival of Love label are the same people depicted individually on their Lefty Series labels. The Lefty wines include 2007 The Boxer Shiraz (rated as the Wine Spectator “Editor’s Most Exciting New Wines”, Two Left Feet Shiraz/Cabernet/
