Berlin, August 2008: The car parc in Kazakhstan has grown strongly to about 2,5 mio. cars in the last years. Reasons were increasing imports of used cars and sales of new cars in the recent years. As a result, attractive opportunities arise in the new car segment as well as in the aftermarket.
Globis GmbH, a German consulting company, has analyzed the Kazakhstani automotive market in a comprehensive research report.
With 15,5 mio. inhabitants, Kazakhstan is the fourth largest country in CIS, after Russia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. Kazakhstan’s real average income was growing with double-digits over the last years and is now at 424 USD per month.
In comparison to Western European countries, the car parc is relatively small and comprises mainly imported used cars. In the last years, the new car market increased heavily and shows annual growth rates up to 40%. In the future, these growth rates can not be maintained and will sink to 19% growth p.a. until 2010.
“Kazakhstan currently is not a market for small cars. Most cars sold are from lower and upper medium class or SUV-class. It is unclear, how consumers will react to a better offering of smaller, affordable cars. With energy prices up and inflation on the rise, smaller, less fuel consuming cars could be an opportunity in the market” argues Felix Kuesell, managing director of Globis and editor of the study.
The aftermarket is one of the most attractive sectors of the Kazakhstani automotive industry over the next years with an estimated growth of almost 10% p.a. until 2010. Market structures are just forming and there is great value to be generated for suppliers by entering early. However, distribution is a real challenge: until now there is only insufficient coverage of service stations and spare parts shops.
