WHY IS THIS TYPE OF PROGRAM NEEDED IN BAHAMA VILLAGE?
Bahama Village is the most economically disadvantaged community in Key West, Florida and has a large population of African-American descendants from the Bahamas, Latin America and surrounding islands. Girls in this community are at-risk for domestic violence, teen-aged pregnancy, drug abuse, truancy, and juvenile delinquency. Housing is substandard, and abandoned houses pollute Bahama Village, a community rich in African-American heritage and history. Much of this history has been lost through the generations, as open-air drug markets and alcoholism dampens the spirits of its residents. Tourism and redevelopment has threatened the survival of this historic community, leaving residents to pay inflated property taxes, which most cannot afford. i Control Power Girls™ aims to teach girls how to write and tell their stories in the form of a motivational or inspirational speech, and help other youths gain higher self-esteem. These girls will grow up to become women with purpose and power.

HOW DOES I CONTROL POWER GIRLS™ IMPACT OTHER YOUTHS?
i Control Power Girls™ is a 10-week after-school program which will begin January 2009. Girls will learn how to write and deliver motivational and inspirational speeches to their peers across the United States. Girls will learn proper body movement, gestures, voice inflection, and energy necessary to deliver a professional speech. Girls will eventually perfect their writing and speaking skills, enabling them to speak for profit. Girls will learn how to create a speaker one-page, web site, and how to market their speech to community organizations throughout the state of Florida and U.S. After completion of the program, girls will produce speeches on a variety of topics affecting youths such as drug prevention, self-esteem, academic success, and diversity. The i Control Power Girls™ audio/video project will be marketed to schools nationally.
