NASHVILLE – How well do you know your current music? Here’s a quick quiz to test your knowledge: What do Lynyrd Skynyrd, George Thorogood, Buddy Guy, Van Zant, Billy Ray Cyrus, Susan Tedeschi and the Disney hit movies Cars and Ratatouille all have in common? It’s actually pretty easy to find a common link. Just ask Nashville-based songwriter and producer Tom Hambridge. His written and produced music has served as the inspiration for all of those great artists, and has also been featured in those two very popular movies.
Hambridge has made a business of keeping himself behind the scenes for a lot of his musical career. His resume includes working with some of the greatest musical legends in the country and has plenty of gold and platinum records, Grammy nominations and a 2007 ASCAP award to his credit for Keith Anderson’s hit “Everytime I Hear Your Name.” It reached #7 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs Chart, #64 on the Hot 100, and #97 on the Pop 100, becoming Anderson's highest-peaking song to date.
Even though he’s busier than ever Hambridge says, “I don’t want to make a lot of records …I just want to make a few great records that stand the test of time.”
On Hambridge’s latest project, Skin Deep, he wrote or co-wrote with Buddy Guy 10 songs on the legendary blues artists’ latest CD, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Blues and No. 68 on the Billboard 200 charts making it Buddy Guy’s highest charting record of all time. Guy says: “the songwriting collaboration with Tom was one of the most enjoyable parts. This is my first record with 100 percent new material, something that makes me proud.”
Record companies, managers and artists come to Hambridge for his production skills which include writing songs, playing, singing, arranging as well as producing the record. Hambridge explains his production style, “Writing and producing music is like building a house to me. I don’t want to come in after it’s built and decorate it or paint it. My job as a songwriter and producer is to find the lot, break ground, pour the foundation, frame it, put the walls up, put in the plumbing and heating … and then can I finally decorate it and paint it. I want that house to be strong and stand the test of time for years to come.”
A native son of Buffalo, New York, Hambridge started playing drums at the age of five and was in his first band, Undertow, in the third grade. Tom's formal education began with a scholarship at Boston's world famous Berklee School of Music, where he frequently returns as a guest lecturer. After years of touring, and performances with many of the biggest names in the business like Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Roy Buchanan, Hank Williams, Jr., The Drifters and many more, he set his sights on Nashville where he lives and works today as a producer, songwriter, and performer.
When he’s not busy writing and producing, Hambridge has released four critically acclaimed solo CD’s and regularly tours the country with his band Tom Hambridge and the Rattlesnakes.
