Sept. 22, 2008 - PRLog -- Portland, OR -- Professional Chef and author Liz Scott will be in Portland, Oregon at the Western Culinary Institute on October 17th, presenting a demonstration and workshop on “Healthy cooking without the alcohol” to Alumni and guests of Hazelden Springbrook, a drug and alcohol treatment center located in Newberg, Oregon.

Liz Scott is a professional chef and recovering alcoholic who specializes in cooking for people with specific dietary needs.  Her first book, the Sober Kitchen: Recipes and Advice for a Lifetime of Sobriety, was developed after Scott left treatment and was faced with the realization that little information existed for those that could no longer cook, eat or be around recipes that included alcohol.  As a food expert, Scott knew that good food choices could make a marked difference in the healing process while easing some of the ups and downs associated with the early recovery process for addiction as well as other diseases.  Published in 2003 The Sober Kitchen provides a practical guide to cooking and supplemental nutrition, along with Chef Scott’s own tips for entertaining with a lighthearted flair.

“I wanted to make this book as easy to read and utilize as possible while showing that, like my own recovery, great recipes and healthy choices are made one step at a time,” says Scott.  “Tapping into the benefits of a healthy diet and approach to food is vitally important for everyone and can be instrumental in creating a new and alcohol free lifestyle.”

Embraced as a standard guide by The Hazelden Foundation and applauded by the Research Society on Alcoholism, The Sober Kitchen has received numerous awards and helped thousands of individuals and families in their journey towards health and freedom from addiction.

Scott wrote her second cookbook, Sober Celebrations: Lively Entertaining Without the Spirits, (published by the Cleveland Clinic Press) in which she expands on The Sober Kitchen taking alcohol-free cooking and entertaining to the next level.  By incorporating themed ideas for specific celebrations from Bridal Showers to Birthdays, she succeeds in making cooking and entertaining as fun and fearless as it should be.

Sober Celebrations: Lively Entertaining without the Spirits was recently been awarded the 2008 National Health Information Awards, honoring the nation's best consumer health information programs and materials.  It is being utilized by treatment centers across the country both as a reference for their own meal preparations, and as an important resource for those leaving treatment.  Medical professionals and counselors are referring patients to both The Sober Kitchen and Sober Celebrations to clients with addiction issues, as well as medical and lifestyle concerns that require abstinence from any alcohol products.

Chef Liz Scott during her presentation at Hazelden Springbrook will focus on a Healthy Harvest with a menu that includes recopies that incorporate fall ingredients like Tillamook’s smoked cheese for onion soup and their Pumpkin ice cream for dessert.  Scott will demonstrate how to prepare the meal.  Attendees will then break in to separate groups to each create their own courses to be enjoyed and celebrated together.  A book signing of Scott’s books The Sober Kitchen and Sober Celebrations will take place after the event.

About Chef Liz Scott:  Chef Liz has recently completed the definitive drink guide, Zero Proof Cocktails: Alcohol-Free Beverages for All Occasions, due out in early 2009 from Ten Speed Press. She continues to cater sober events, teach educational classes and workshops on alcohol-free cooking at culinary schools and treatment centers, and consults on diet and nutrition. Scott is a regular columnist for Recovery Today Newspaper – online, and has an ongoing guest segment, “In the Sober Kitchen,” on Recovery Coast to Coast radio (www.recoverycoasttocoast.org.)  Chef Liz Scott’s website is www.sober-celebrations.com.
