University Students Help With Low Cost Tutoring

Faced with rising university costs, more and more students are getting involved with private tutoring, either at home or online

Sept. 21, 2008 - PRLog -- Faced with rising student debts, increasing rent costs, and higher general living expenses in many areas of the UK, more and more university students are turning to private tutoring as a means to earning a living through university.

Traditionally, bar or restaurant work had been seen as the standard way to fund (in part at least) one’s way through university. But this is less and less of a favourable option, faced with the growing demand for private tutors. This growth in demand has been catalysed by a number of elements, amongst which the heightened level of examinations; the increased perceived weakness in the state school system, and the increased disparity between the state and private sectors, with many parents therefore willing to do whatever it takes so that their child can succeed in their examinations, thus winning a ticket out of the state system to the perceived El Dorado of the private school system.

This has created a demand for greater capacity in the private tutoring sector, and while the heightened demand has inflated prices at one end of the spectrum, university students, including those from the UK’s world renowned blue riband elite institutions, are able to tutor for relatively low cost (around £15/hour, including travel), which is a quarter of the price that many top private tutors charge currently.

Having a university student tutoring your child has numerous advantages. He/she will be closer in age to the pupil, which allows for a greater empathy and rapport, and thus a greater level of receptiveness and enthusiasm on the part of the child. Secondly, the student will have recently sat the exams that the pupil is about to sit. This means that not only will he/she have an inside track on any tricks or tips that could help when it comes to revising or the exam itself, he will also know how best to explain certain facets of the syllabus that may be tricky, since he too, only recently, had to negotiate those same hurdles. And finally, the student, as someone who has recently trod the same path as that of the pupil, got through it with flying colours, and is now a member of a prestigious academic serves as a goal of sorts for the pupil, as something for the pupil to aspire to and aim for.

Through standard home tutoring, as well as the growing phenomenon of online tutoring, top UK university students are increasingly available as tutors for low cost, and can be as effective as highly priced “conventional” private tutors.
