The end of the Cold War in December, 1991 cured the financial woes of the past. In the 1990's, what was national debt turned into a surplus. But then the DOT.COM balloon burst. September 11th occurred. The Iraq War began. Then the mortgage crisis happened. What does it add up to? The current Wall Street meltdown might mean Depression-era blues, according to novelist D.L. Shiloh.
“No matter how it turns out, it's got a lot of people running that the proverbial sky is falling,” Shiloh said. “You have a country of people who survived the Cold War times to find prosperity, their own piece of the dream, and now they're wondering if the dream is just a sand castle. This financial crisis is America's real hurricane.”
Shiloh, who is currently making plans to do a U.S. book tour, is at work on a novel about mid-life crisis in the suburbs titled THE PILGRIM COMMUTER. With urban decay returning, college scholarships in jeopardy, and new homeless tent cities cropping up around the U.S., Shiloh admits that the situation is grim for the moment. “It's rough going for a lot of people. I don't know of anyone too thrilled at the moment to be part of something historical.”
