About the American Chestnut Tree
The most famous nut tree in early America was the native chestnut which settlers treasured for high quality lumber and the incomparable sweet flavor of the nuts that covered the forest floor.
Many grandparents claim that the original American Chestnut was the best tasting chestnut. Today the American Chestnut tree is nearly extinct due to the blight that almost exterminated this native tree 75 years ago.
Unique Characteristics of the American Chestnut Tree:
* America Chestnuts are easy to sprout, and you can grow your own trees from the seed.
* Our chestnut trees produce large, honey sweet kernels of unexcelled taste and quality.
* Chestnuts can be eaten fresh or stored for later.
* Chestnuts can be used in the preparation of many dressings for poultry and meat: or they can be eaten, boiled, toasted, or steamed.
* Chestnuts can be crushed and powdered into a flower to be made into a heavy flat cake that strongly resembles an oatmeal cake.
Growing Tips:
American chestnut trees produce best when planted in full sun and are ideally suited to sandy, well-drained soils and are adaptable to most any growing condition. The trees are cold hardy and can survive temperatures of minus 29 degrees. The trees are not self-pollinating and two different trees must be planted to insure a crop nut set.
Chestnut trees work well as a "city street" tree and they produce free nuts.
