Patrick Scott Patterson of Denton, TX is going out of his way to prove that all the people that once told him video games were a waste of time dead wrong.
Patterson not only turned his lifelong passion for video games into his own business, Hyperspace Arcade Entertainment, in 2005, but he now approaches major milestones in competitive video gaming in less than a year after beginning to participate in it.
Patrick Scott joined longtime video game and pinball scorekeeping organization Twin Galaxies back in March of this year. Twin Galaxies has existed since 1981, created by Mr. Walter Day of Iowa as an official sanctioning body for keeping track of World Record scores on video games. Twin Galaxies is still going strong today, partering with Guinness World Records as the official content providers for the Guinness World Records Gamers Edition book, which will release it's second edition in February 2009. It also appears in it's official scorekeeping capacity in recent documentary movies such as "The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters" which in less than a year has already proven to be a hit in limited theatrical release, DVD, and cable airings on the G4 Network.
Patterson, as of this writing, holds over 280 different scores with Twin Galaxies, recognized by them as official World Records across numerous gaming platforms, with over a dozen more scores already submitted for verification to Twin Galaxies to add to his total. This puts Patterson at 13th place overall on the Twin Galaxies leaderboard in just a little more than half a year with the 27 year old organization.
Some of Patterson's records include the recognized World Record scores on the original Super Mario Bros. on three different gaming platforms (the classic Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo, and current kingpin Nintendo Wii), a recently verified tie on Wii Sports Baseball with a 17-point victory, destruction of Madden NFL 08 with a 100 point victory, records on the classic puzzler Lode Runner on numerous platforms, top scores on the Super Nintendo version of Tetris and many more. All told, Patterson's list of record scores goes across nearly every gaming platform of note ever made, from the hit Nintendo systems noted to the original XBox and PlayStation consoles, and even including the classic Commodore 64 personal computer.
Looking into 2009, Mr. Patterson looks foward to travelling to make his arcade gaming debut with Twin Galaxies by participating in the 11th Annual Classic Arcade Tournment at the huge Funspot Arcade in New Hampshire, and appearing in print in the 2009 Edition of the Guinness World Records Gamers Edition book, where he recently got word of several of this verified Twin Galaxies scores will appear in. Patterson would also like to use his newfound position in the world of video gaming to give back, and use video gaming as a tool to promote positive participation and traits with charity organizations and others.
It's all a dream come true for Patterson, who played his first video game, Pac-Man, in 1981 at the age of 6 years old and was instantly hooked. Somehow, in the midst of setting nearly 300 World Record scores, he runs his full-time business Hyperspace Arcade Entertainment , which repairs and restores arcade video games for others as well as offering refurbished arcade games for sale, and also raises a young son who will be turning 3 years old in November.
