The Montgomery Mall recently hosted a Community Shred Day for local community members to destroy and recycle sensitive materials. In total, 9,400 pounds (or 4.7 tons) of important documents were shredded and recycled at the event. In general, each ton of shredded and recycled paper saves 17 trees and 3,000 gallons of water. During the Community Shred Day, 80 trees and 14,000 gallons of water were saved by local participants.
Focused on green initiative and protecting consumer information, Montgomery Township, Harleysville National Bank, Staples, and North Wales Water Authority partnered with the mall to offer this community awareness event. During the event, community members learned how to prevent becoming a victim of identity theft from the Montgomery Township Police Department and Staples provided free security checks for individuals who brought laptop computers.
“With identity theft growing, it is important for consumers to dispose of sensitive material properly and this shred day made a difference,”
Doylestown-based document shredding company, Titan Mobile Shredding, provided the shredding equipment. A wide variety of materials were destroyed throughout the day including tax records, medical information, bills as well as confidential documents like unsolicited credit card applications. The shredded materials were then recycled at a local recycling center.
