Charles Town, West Virginia – Mayra Ruiz-McPherson, a marketing strategist and publicity expert based in the outskirts of historic Charles Town, has witnessed to the err of marketing ways by all levels of management. After years of seeing marketing faux-pas after faux-pas unfold before her very eyes, Ruiz-McPherson believed something good should come from all the promotional bloopers and communications gaffes. And so from this very seed, the Marketing Misfit blog was born.

“After years of seeing managers and senior level folks make a steady stream of marketing blunders, I began to actually question my sanity,” shares Ruiz-McPherson. “I would see Marketing Directors, VPs and even CEOs completely blow off the most practical of marketing approaches. I wasn’t sure if it was real or if it was Memorex.”

Over time, Ruiz-McPherson realized, to her chagrin, that marketing bloopers of all shapes and sizes were a regular part of marketing life. “It’s very discouraging to see so many people in marketing positions at all levels blatantly unaware or unwilling to follow marketing best practices—especially when this kind of helpful information is easily available to most anyone with access to the Internet.”

In the end, frustration led to humor. “At some point, you have to let it go and allow yourself to laugh about it.” It was this spirit that gave way to the Marketing Misfit theme and blog. “I guess I did start feeling a bit like a marketing misfit,” Ruiz-McPherson shares. “I coined the phrase to humorously express how I was feeling … like a marketer on the sidelines, witnessing in disbelief all the marketing foolishness taking place in today’s business climate.”

Soon Ruiz-McPherson found herself writing about her experiences. “I decided writing about marketing bloopers would be a great way for folks to learn from the mistakes of others.”

The Marketing Misfit blog first debuted in June 2008 and, in the two short months since its launch, the blog’s popularity has risen from zero to approximately 125 unique visitors per week.

“If readers walk away with a better sense of how to — or in some cases how not to — approach a certain marketing task, then the time and resources to keep the blog going is worth the effort.”
