Sept. 10, 2008 - PRLog -- The Boston branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) will hold its annual Freedom Fund Dinner Thursday evening, Sept. 11, 2008, at the Seaport Hotel in Boston.

The event’s theme this year is “The Civil Rights Movement: Looking Back, Moving Forward.” The evening is scheduled to include a presentation from Performance poet and vocalist Iyeoka Ivie Okoawo.  The presentation will include original work written particularly for the occasion and will include collaborations with a dancer and Live musicians.

“I am so honored to reveal this piece at this historic event,” explains Iyeoka.  “In 2008, there is so much for all members and supporters of the NAACP to be proud of and excited about.  In the same breath, there are still so many people in our community including all races and nationalities, stuck in the category of the disadvantaged and uninspired.  My goal tomorrow night is to inspire and re-awaken awareness of our journey from issues of self-image to overcoming struggles that will lead to the sound of more glass ceilings breaking.”

Gov. Deval Patrick will serve as the keynote speaker at the dinner. Karen Holmes Ward, host and executive producer of WCVB-TV’s “CityLine,” will serve as the evening’s mistress of ceremonies.

According to the NAACP, the dinner provides an opportunity to recognize “selfless leaders, corporate citizens and young people who continue to demand more of themselves, our communities, institutions and our country.”

During this year’s dinner, the Boston branch plans to honor Deval Patrick with its Lifetime Achievement Award and Leonard C. Alkins, former president of the Boston branch.
U.S. Sens. Edward M. Kennedy and John F. Kerry join Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino in serving as honorary chairs for this year’s dinner.

On Sunday September 14th, Iyeoka Ivie Okoawo will be involved in yet another event presented by Menino with the Office of Arts and Tourism along with sponsor Target.
