A tool is a device or a piece of equipment that typically provides a mechanical advantage in
accomplishing a task or enables the accomplishment of difficult tasks.
Before the Industrial Revolution of the 18th century, hand tools were used to cut and shape
materials for the production of goods such as wagons, ships etc. After the advent of the steam
engine machine tools came into being. Today Hundreds of varieties of metal machine tools, ranging
in size from small machines mounted on workbenches to huge production machines weighing
several hundred tons, are used in modern industry.
At first Steel with a carbon content ranging from 1 to 1.2 percent was the earliest material used in
machine tools. In 1900 the introduction of high-speed steel permitted the operation of tools at twice
or three times the speeds allowable with carbon steel, thus doubling or trebling the capacities of the
world’s machine shops
Currently the Indian machine tool industry caters to other sectors such as electronics, consumer
durables, IT products, telecom and packaging, accounting for 50% of the total consumption.
Burgeoning growth in the manufacturing sector over the last four years has pitch forked the Indian
machine tool industry into the global market. As a sunrise sector, it has witnessed about 60%
growth in the last two three years, due to the phenomenal demand by the manufacturing sector
across verticals. On a wider base, it is poised to grow by 20% to 25% annually over the next five
years
Various studies estimate that China and India will account for 60% to 70% of the global automotive
production by 2020, resulting in the phenomenal growth of manufacturing and ancillary industries,
