Sept. 7, 2008 - PRLog -- Liposuction is a good way to remove stubborn fat deposits that are not responding to diet and exercise. It is a procedure in which fat deposits can be removed from specific areas eg: abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, upper arms, chin, cheeks and neck. The best candidates for liposuction are of a normal weight and have a few problem areas where fat deposits have settled. Good candidates will have firm elastic skin, as opposed to those patients that might have older less elastic or thin skin. Liposuction is not a substitute for weight reduction
PROCEDURE
Before the procedure begins, the doctor will apply a local anesthetic, or in other cases where a larger amount of fat is to be removed, a regional anesthetic (like an epidural during childbirth) or general anesthesia. A tiny incision is made near the area where the fat is being removed, through the incision a tube or a cannula is inserted and used to vacuum out the fat deposits in the surrounding areas. The cannula pushes through the fat layer, breaking the fat up making it easier to suction it out.
You can have many areas treated at one time. The amount of time that the liposuction plastic surgery takes really depends on the areas where the fat is being removed, the amount of fat being removed, and the techniques that are being used to remove the fat. The entire procedure takes 1 to 4 hours.
POST-OPERATIVE
Patients receive a snug garment to be worn in the days following the procedure. The garment helps the skin to better fit over the body’s new contours and helps keep the swelling down. After the surgery, patients can expect to have some fluid drainage from the incisions. In some cases a tube may be inserted to help with the drainage for a few days. Any stitches will be removed in five to ten days or dissolve, and you should be back at work in 2 - 3 days. The scars from the incisions may be visible for months following the surgery. However, the scars are small and usually well hidden.
You can see the change in your bodies contour within days after the procedure. Swelling and full effects will not be seen for at least 4 to 6 weeks after the surgery.
RISKS
Some risks include infection, shock from fluid loss, blood clots and the formation of fat clots. Risks are greater when higher amounts of fat are removed.
