Change to UK Tax Laws: Is Your Rebate Right?

There have been a number of changes to the UK tax system in recent months that have hit the headlines, but what do these changes mean for the man and woman on the street and will it affect their tax rebates?

Sept. 4, 2008 - PRLog -- PAYEright.co.uk can check your tax code, ensure it is correct and liaise with H M Revenue & Customs to ensure that you receive the correct tax refund in light of the recent government changes.

In the 2007 Budget, Gordon Brown, who was then Chancellor, announced that he was scrapping the 10 per cent tax band. He also lowered the basic rate of tax from 22 per cent to 20 per cent. These changes came into effect at the begining of the 2008 tax year, and it soon became clear that low-income tax payers would be hit hardest by these changes to the tax system.

In an attempt to remedy this situation, and in what many saw as a backtrack, the government announced in May of 2008 that they were amending its Budget proposals and would raise the level of personal allowance and lower the higher tax rate threshold. The changes will be backdated to the start of the 2008/2009 tax year with taxpayers being eligible for a tax refund if they have overpaid tax at any point in the proceeding months.

It’s fair to say that by this point most people in the UK are pretty confused by a tax system that was already somewhat oblique. On the face of it the information is out there; everyone has a personal allowance of £6,035 in the tax year 2008/2009 which is not taxed (the revised allowance announced in May). However, as is evidently the case, the tax system is liable to regular adjustments which are out of the individual’s control, and not all revisions will be as high profile as the 10 per cent tax issue. And even if an individual is sure that they are elgible for a tax rebate how to go about getting it is another issue. The official instructions are simply: contact your local tax office, but this can be a lengthy and time consuming process.
