Timothy Doolen, IAFT’s executive program director, describes the international gallery: "In the last three years, we have had students representing more than 25 countries at IAFT. So, on this YouTube channel you will see a world perspective and a variety of different styles of storytelling and filmmaking.”
YouTube provides an outlet previously unknown to aspiring filmmakers; it is now a means to promote their work and a way to become known. It also assists IAFT’s mission to create working and productive professionals through supportive promotional efforts. IAFT creates a balance of theory and hands on experience that allows students to develop their own ideas and also assist peers on their projects. YouTube allows students to gain the exposure they need and presents opportunities for millions of people to view their perspective and ideas.
IAFT is making strides to promote artistic freedom and technically savvy students by uploading films like “Wish,” a film about a deaf break dancer; “Melody,” about a violinist following her dreams; “Beat Sushi Sushi,” a comedic YouTube favorite; “At the Movies,” a film about moviegoer romance and voyeurism. Doolen continues, "Even with a wide diversity of cultures, perspectives and interests among our international students, you will find one thing that is consistent among all the short films on the IAFT YouTube channel -- each student tells their story with a distinct visual style and the highest technical quality possible"
Each term, students show their short films at community screenings and graduation ceremonies. Many go on to show their films at worldwide festivals. "We feel that the new IAFT YouTube channel is a perfect way to showcase the exciting young talent coming out of IAFT, while at the same time letting the world watch some great short films,” says Doolen.
