The Moving Architects’ BRASS FIGURES reveals through dance and original music the literary voices of past and contemporary Chicago writers. Artist Director/Choreographer Erin Carlisle Norton’s world premiere of “This Sandy Cube,” inspired by a short story of Dave Eggers, is anchored in the real world while revealing our superior, animal, and searching natures.  A journey of four women begins with brashness, intuitively caravans through time and space, ending with a conjoining if the spirits. Original music by Ian Hatcher highlights the passing and pushing of time through xylophone, melodihorn and guitar.

The acclaimed “1001 Afternoons in Chicago” is inspired by the 1920’s short stories of Chicago’s journalist Ben Hecht.  The dancers playfully and thoughtfully embellish and embody the characters, images, and cityscapes, specific to the classic Chicago scene.  Original music by Amos Gillespie, of Accessible Contemporary Music, provides a contemporary classical music ensemble score that pinpoints the currents and styling of the time.

BRASS FIGURES features dancers Anna Goldman, Stefanie Karlin, Erin Carlisle Norton and Alison Riazi,; with costumes by Lisa Stevens, lighting design by Kalamazoo’s own Megan Slayter, original composition by Amos Gillespie and Ian Hatcher and choreography by Artistic Director Erin Carlisle Norton. The two performance will be Saturday, September 13, 2008 at 2 and 8pm at Kalamazoo’s Wellspring Theater at Epic Center. Call 312-343-2840, or visit www.TheMovingArchitects.org for more information and to buy tickets.

*1001 Afternoons in Chicago is an innovative collaboration between The Moving Architects and Accessible Contemporary Music composers Amos Gillespie and Seth Boustead. In the 1920’s Ben Hecht, a writer at the time for the Daily News, challenged himself to write a short story each day and publish it in the paper. He succeeded and the result has been compiled and published as 1001 Afternoons in Chicago. This collaborative piece explores 12 of the stories through music, motion, and visual imagery.

The Moving Architects, under the direction of Erin Carlisle Norton, construct expert, articulate contemporary dance by allowing space to inform the creation and performance of the work. The keystone of the company is to also provide quality movement classes, workshops, residencies and public discourse.
