This week, Be Broadband announced that it had introduced a new broadband speed tester feature to the service home page. Following a request from Ofcom that service providers should be more honest about their speed delivery the new web application gives customers an estimated speed quote, as well as a better idea of the level of service they will receive.
By logging on to the Be Broadband home page customers are invited to test their broadband speed by clicking on the ‘Go’ graphic. After a short while an estimated speed pops up showing Be’s evaluation of your received broadband speed. If deemed to be sluggish the site then quips: “Well, you won’t be setting any landline speed records today.” The visitor is then invited to enter their landline phone details to receive a estimate on the speeds they could be receiving if they switched to Be Broadband.
Be Broadband commented that their decision to make the speed estimator so widely available should encourage other broadband providers to “show their commitment to the Ofcom voluntary code of practice.”
If you’re interested in finding out your current broadband speed but would also like to know what speed you could be receiving (based on your postcode) then Broadband Genie has its own speed checker available at http://speedtest.broadbandgenie.co.uk.
By telling us a little bit about your broadband connection using the easy form at the top of the page Broadband genie suggests some faster and cheaper broadband providers, whether you’re a business or a home user.
Ciaron Dunne from Broadband Genie, explains: “Whilst it’s very encouraging to see features like broadband speed estimators appearance on service provider’s websites, of course the prime objective is to swing your vote and get you to sign up to their own service. Broadband Genie is a completely independent broadband comparison site, so you can be assured that you’re getting the most accurate and informative broadband package tips without any hidden agendas.”
