Great Lakes Scholars Announced

Valley Christian Academy in Aurora, OH, is pleased to announce that 3 students have been named 2008 Great Lakes Scholars.  

The students receiving such designation are:
Audrey Gray - Chagrin Falls, OH
Alina Tiber - Chagrin Falls, OH
Jonathan Kontur - Northfield, OH

The noted students join over 5000 3rd-8th graders from across the Great Lakes Region of the Midwest that received such acclaim.  Over 2400 teachers participated in the project to select and honor students who not only excel academically but show that they are well-rounded individuals.  To find a qualified individual, teachers were asked to only consider students with a B average or higher.  From there, they were asked to nominate students who were involved in extra-curriculars, athletics, participate in community or church groups and are involved in community service.  Students nominated then submitted an application to complete the process.

Great Lakes Scholars was established to inspire children to achieve with the hope that it motivates students at a young age level to show that achievement counts, hard work matters, and actively participating in school and community events is important.

“As Principal of Valley Christian Academy, I am delighted to recognize the academic success and personal contributions which these students have made to our school and to their communities,” said Connie Eide, Principal of Valley Christian Academy.  “They are highly responsible young adults who are positively impacting their peer group. They exhibit high moral standards and depth of character as they interact with adults and students. They have the potential to be the future leaders of this country through their church and community involvement. Congratulations Alina, Audrey and Jonathan!”

"It is inspiring for us to see all that these young people have accomplished," said Mike Gill, President of the organization. "As I read the applications that came into our office, I was amazed at how active and involved these students are in so many activities.  We have a wealth of developing talent in our region.  A Great Lakes Scholar is a classroom leader today who will be our country's future leaders."  

Great Lakes Scholars is part of the 11 year old Scholars Program that honors students in 6 midwest states (Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota) and three others across the country.

Over the summer, Great Lakes Scholars were honored in various fashions.  On two different nights, Scholars were honored by the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park.  For the fourth time, the Cleveland Indians honored the Scholars at Progressive Field while the Chicago White Sox hosted Great Lakes Scholars for the third time.  In each of these events, the students were on the field for a ceremony prior to the start of a major league baseball game.

A book has been published listing all the 2008 Great Lakes Scholars and their accomplishments.  In addition, an Internet site lists the names of the honorees.
